Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated: July 27, 2026

What is SelectDrive?

SelectDrive is an owner-operated driveaway business based in the Des Moines, Iowa metro. It currently accepts quote and planning requests for a model in which a professional drives an operable vehicle on its own wheels. No interstate for-hire move starts until required operating authority is granted and active and every trip prerequisite is approved.

Who drives my vehicle?

Dan Ketelsen is SelectDrive's owner, planned primary driver, and primary customer contact. Any future approved trip must identify the assigned driver in the signed agreement before pickup. SelectDrive is not a marketplace posting jobs to an open load board.

What types of vehicles do you transport?

SelectDrive reviews operable cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and passenger vans for possible service. Vehicle, route, driver, operating, insurance, and signed-agreement approval are required. An inoperable vehicle or a low-mileage collector car that should stay off the road is better suited to a trailer carrier. If you have a specialty vehicle, request a review.

How does pricing work?

The preliminary model bills driver pay at $450 per day in half-day increments, with a one-day minimum. It adds gas fuel at about $0.18 per mile, tolls at about $0.02 per mile, $120 lodging per night on multi-day trips, an 8 percent insurance surcharge on driver pay, and itemized positioning travel. Requests under 3 days notice add 5 percent. Pilot and the calculator provide nonbinding estimates, and the signed agreement controls any approved trip.

How does pricing work for an electric vehicle?

Electric charging is billed at documented actual cost with receipts, not a mileage allowance. An electric vehicle usually takes longer than the same route in a gas vehicle because charging stops add time. The exact vehicle and battery matter because highway range varies greatly between models, so SelectDrive must review those details before confirming a plan.

What is the deposit and payment process?

For a future approved booking, a 25% deposit would generally be required after the attestations and signed trip agreement are complete. Payment alone would not authorize a trip. The vehicle, driver, route, authority when required, operating requirements, and insurance must also be approved. The signed agreement would state when the balance is due. Stripe processes card payments; SelectDrive does not need your full card number.

How do I book a transport?

There are two ways to request planning:

  • Chat with Pilot: Open the orange chat button for service questions and a preliminary estimate.
  • Contact form: Send the vehicle, route, dates, and special requirements for a human-reviewed quote.

Where do you operate?

SelectDrive reviews proposed lower 48 routes from its Des Moines base. Common planning requests include seasonal snowbird moves, permanent relocation, college moves, military PCS vehicles arranged privately, and out-of-state purchases. A quote is not a dispatch commitment. No interstate move starts until required operating authority is granted and active and the applicable insurance, vehicle, driver, and signed agreement are approved.

How long does a transport take?

Planning estimates use about eight driving hours or roughly 500 miles per day, plus overnight stops on longer routes. Weather, traffic, vehicle condition, rest, and access can change timing, so estimates are not delivery guarantees.

Is my vehicle insured during transport?

Before booking, request current insurance documentation for the trip and ask which policy applies to the vehicle and assigned driver, including limits, deductible, exclusions, and claims contact. Keep your own auto policy active and ask your insurer how it treats driveaway service. See the insurance verification guide.

Does driveaway add miles to my car?

Yes. The car is driven on its own wheels, so the route distance is added to the odometer along with normal road wear. If added mileage is not acceptable, use a trailer carrier. Our side-by-side comparison explains the trade-offs.

Can I send a pet or belongings with the car?

A pet that travels well may accompany the vehicle it belongs to, and ordinary belongings that fit safely below the window line may be accommodated, but both require advance disclosure and written approval in the trip agreement. Approval is separate from the price estimate and is never automatic. These accommodations are incidental to delivering the vehicle. SelectDrive does not offer household goods moving, standalone goods delivery, or standalone pet transport. No person may ever travel in the vehicle.

Read the pets and belongings policy and the Prohibited Items rules.

What is the cancellation policy?

  • 7+ days before pickup: Full refund of your deposit.
  • More than 48 hours but fewer than 7 calendar days before pickup: Refund at SelectDrive's discretion based on costs already incurred.
  • Within 48 hours of pickup: Deposit is forfeited and non-refundable.
  • Driver travel: Nonrefundable travel already purchased for the trip may be deducted from a refund.

The confirmed trip agreement controls if it differs from this summary.

Can I track my vehicle during transport?

When tracking is enabled for a confirmed trip, the private link shows location or milestone updates while the vehicle is in transit. Use only the link provided for the booking and do not post it publicly.

Can SelectDrive move a car during a military PCS?

SelectDrive can provide a preliminary planning estimate for a possible private driveaway within the lower 48 after you confirm what your orders and transportation office authorize. No interstate move starts while required authority is pending. SelectDrive does not determine military entitlements or promise reimbursement and does not handle overseas POV shipments. Start with the military PCS guide.

What is Pilot?

Pilot is SelectDrive's AI assistant for service questions and preliminary estimates. Its answers and estimates can be wrong or out of date and are not binding until SelectDrive confirms the trip in writing. Do not put sensitive personal, payment, medical, military, or account information in chat.

Customer protection

What may not be left in a vehicle?

Remove every undeclared or unapproved item and any unapproved animal. Never pack contraband or illegal or stolen property, firearms, ammunition, explosives or weapon parts, hazardous materials, cash or negotiable instruments, medication, critical identity documents, irreplaceable valuables, or anything loose or unsafe. No person may ever travel in the vehicle.

See the complete Prohibited Items rules.

Are personal effects insured?

Do not assume any auto, cargo, or other policy covers property left inside a vehicle or pet-related loss. Ask the applicable insurers and review the signed trip agreement before approval. Keep irreplaceable and high-value items with you.

What is the value limit for personal effects?

No site-wide dollar limit has been approved. High-value items should not travel. Any declared exception beyond ordinary belongings requires advance written approval in the trip agreement, and prohibited or undeclared property is never accepted.

May a firearm or ammunition travel in the vehicle?

No. Remove all firearms, ammunition, explosives, weapon parts, and other weapons before pickup, even if you may lawfully possess them.

May SelectDrive inspect or refuse the vehicle?

Yes. SelectDrive and the assigned driver may request reasonable access to compare the vehicle and accessible contents with your disclosures. They will not force a locked container or break a commercial seal merely to inspect. SelectDrive may refuse pickup or stop work when the documents, vehicle, contents, or conditions are unsafe, illegal, materially different, or inconsistent with the signed agreement.

What happens if the vehicle is delayed?

SelectDrive will provide an update when reasonably possible. Weather, traffic, mechanical condition, safe-rest needs, road closures, accidents, and lawful government action can change timing. Estimates are not guarantees. The signed agreement controls notice, response, added cost, cancellation, and delivery terms.

What happens if the vehicle is stopped, impounded, or seized?

SelectDrive may comply with lawful instructions and notify you when permitted. It cannot promise release or delivery while another authority controls the vehicle. If your property, missing authority, false statement, or breach caused the event, the signed agreement may allocate resulting towing, storage, delay, legal, and response costs to you, to the extent allowed by law.

Commercial and multi-driver program

Can I book commercial fleet or multi-driver service today?

Not through the public consumer booking flow. The program remains in qualification while SelectDrive confirms the legal operating structure, authority when required, insurance, driver screening, vehicles, cargo controls, and customer terms. A commercial inquiry is a request for project review, not a dispatch commitment.

Who is the carrier when SelectDrive coordinates drivers?

It depends on the signed structure and actual operations. In a genuine labor-only arrangement, the customer remains responsible for its trucks, dispatch, safety program, required records, and insurance. If SelectDrive undertakes transportation as the carrier, its own required authority and coverage must be active before movement. A USDOT number is not the same as operating authority, and neither may be rented for another entity's use.

Are commercial GPS tracking and a Certificate of Insurance guaranteed?

No. Location or milestone reporting and insurance documents are confirmed project by project. The applicable policy, certificate, endorsements, exclusions, drivers, vehicles, cargo, lane, and signed agreement control. SelectDrive does not publish an insurance dollar amount on this site.

Future driver opportunities

Is SelectDrive accepting driver applications?

No. The multi-driver program is inactive and SelectDrive is not currently accepting applications. Do not email a license number, tax identification number, background report, or screening document.

What will future driver qualifications include?

Every candidate will need the correct license, verifiable relevant experience, safe communication habits, and authorization for job-related license, motor vehicle record, and background review. A commercial vehicle or CDL assignment can require additional medical, qualification, testing, Clearinghouse, hours-of-service, and record checks. Requirements will be stated for the exact role.

How will driver pay work?

There is no public universal driver rate or guaranteed volume. A written assignment offer will state the pay or trip price, payment timing, expenses, travel plan, work relationship, vehicle, cargo, route, and requirements before the driver accepts.
